Old North’s Shared Shop (unofficial name) is coming soon. We’re not sure where or when, but be ready… We’ve been talking about it for years but talkers don’t get anything done so we’re getting off our ass and making it happen.
What is it?
You could call it a Maker Space, artist collective, shared industrial space, or whatever else your hipster mind comes up with. At its core, we are providing a growing resource for those interested in pursuing a trade to make a living. If its just a hobby or a jobby for you, don’t worry you won’t be ostracized, but you might be bombarded with arguments to quit your day job. At the start, these resources will be wood shop equipment - the good stuff, space - lots of it, and a community of righteous self-employed badasses. Shortly after opening we’re unreasonably optimistic about expanding into other trades, creating a storefront for affordable materials, starting educational classes for growing a business and trade skills, product photo booth, sales avenues, and an indoor skatepark/paintball arena - jk about that last one (but am I?)
Where is it? Nothing is nailed down yet but we’re looking at a couple properties slightly east and south of downtown.
Why am I doing this? I worked alone for years and its no fun. Once I started talking out loud to sawdust piles I decided something needed to change. Working with others is better for morale, creativity, and having more hands when needed. I’m also very familiar with how hard financially a new business can be and sharing the burden benefits all of us.
Why do I need you to sign this? We have found we need a little additional investment and the big guns need to see there is a demand for something like this. It also helps me know how large a space we should start with and where to direct our growth. Plus if we have limited space, then you’ll be the first to know. We haven’t named it either so we’d like your email so you don’t keep looking for “Old North’s Shared Shop”. Thats my name and you can’t have it. Most likely it’ll include a “collective”, “guild”, or some other trendy millennial phrase. Maybe I’ll end it with “Haas” if I feel like trying hard.
Now for what you really want to know, how much $$$. We hope to offer the shared shop for $250/mo which gets you a workbench with about 150 sqft and access to industrial equipment. If you need space of your own for whatever it should be $3-$5/sq ft yearly. Of course nothing is concrete without having a contract on a space, but don’t worry your little heart, it’ll be affordable.
